The name “Roland” was chosen for the ease of pronunciation, thus the exporting its products worldwide would be much easier too. It is a very uniquely chosen name, because since not a lot of companies that sell music products use the initial “R”, Kakehashi was very innovative to choose a name that can be distinctively remembered.
Roland keyboards have been used by many notable keyboard players around the world, such as the famous “Poker Face” song by Lady Gaga, then there’s the hit song “All of Me” by John Legend, and then there’s Lady Gaga’s lead keyboardist Brockett Parson who invented his own 360 keyboards.
A Quick Overview
Roland announced a piece of new music equipment this year, the Roland E-80 keyboard. This bulky and heavy-looking model is also embellished with many qualities. In the making of this instrument, the most technologically advanced components are used to produce that first-rate sound quality that Roland guarantees its buyers.
Unlike the complicated instructions on the settings of previous keyboards, where you need to be Einstein to use it, these settings on the E-80 has been designed to make life much easier, thus it is simpler to grasp and use. There is a Virtual Tone Wheel unit that is merged with the sound system within the keyboard to create a range of intonation from a wave-expansion board.
The E-80 can reproduce a wide variety of captured live sound, such as the flute, drum, 88-key piano, and many more. This includes the acclaimed guitar mode that has its own separate button, an individual equalizer for each tone, and then a drum instrument.
4 Speakers with digital bass enhancers, several buttons, and sliders which make it a breeze to control, maneuver, and access the functions. Perhaps it is a pain for some people with numerous control buttons or knobs, but for others, it may be very effective and time-efficient to have that many knobs.
Effects and Modes
There are 3 different arrangers built into the E-80: 4 x accompaniments, 4 x intro phrases, and 4 x ending phrases. These are done so that the features of songs that are played will be more pragmatic than having those old jumpy sounds (from any instrumental voices) when you transpose. It is also used to convert accompanied chord phrases into a harmonized piece when combined with the melody part.
There is also a guitar mode which is capable of producing that realistic sound of an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar. The guitar voices can be simultaneously used with the 3 different arrangers.
There are a 16-track Sequencer/Recorder and a Style Composer control where you can pick and choose what styles you want and record what you played along with the instrument voices and arrangers. The E-80 features effects for each processing category (MFX A to C) for the multiple-choice of songs and styles that are available to choose from. There is a 3-band equalizer for every instrument voice that is installed on this keyboard, which puts more of a realistic impact on each voice.
Amplification and Viewer
On a color LCD touchscreen display, the lyrics of songs or BMP picture files are depicted on the screen through the Viewer control function. When you decide to flip the pages of sheet music over, just simply press on the Page Turner control function after you have selected which page you wish to turn over, it will then give a slideshow-looking effect.
In addition to the LCD display, Roland made sure to fit in a premium amp system, where every song or style category has their individually assigned Mastering Tools effects. A Speaker Simulation and Digital Bass Enhancer that is modifiable for tuning the sounds perfectly. These characteristics are controlled by an On/Off switch that links to the speakers within the keyboard.
Slots and Functions
From the SRX-series, there are 2 slots that can be optionally stored which was initially used from this series on the expansion boards. Loops or grooves of a song or tempo style that has been mechanically synchronized are existent within some boards. Therefore, it gives the option for the user to complement their own audio to the keyboard’s data style.
There are 2 function controls on the E-80 which makes it easier for you to redesign the voices that were pre-installed on the keyboard without having to struggle to edit each part of a voice for hours on end. It is the Song and Style Cover setting and the parameters of the Makeup Tools, which has made it comprehensive for recomposing the current Standard MIDI Files and Music Styles.
In order to extend the versions of the songs that you play from the pre-installed or recorded songs, these standard files can also be altered through 4 coded Mark and Jump stored memories.
The Vocal Harmonist
The Vocal Harmonist is an automatic feature that adds harmonies to the singing voices by applying a range of modes for converting a particular voice into another person’s voice. This is done through an optional mic (Roland DR-10/DR-20) that can be plugged into the E-80.
The signals produced by a signing voice or the Vocal Harmonist can be plugged into the Main Output or transferred to the mixer channels (channel 1 or channel 2).
External Audio input equipment that lets you connect other signal bases to your compositions, such as CD players and sound modules.
