1. How does a turntable work?
The turntable or the “phonograph” operates on the simple process of revolution. It has a motor for direct drive or belt drive, which makes the platter rotate. We place the record on the platter. The turntable also has a tonearm with a headshell and a compatible magnetic or ceramic cartridge. The tonearm comes in contact with the record and produces sound waves that we hear.
2. How to connect a turntable to a receiver?
Before you connect the turntable to the receiver, you need to find the location of the phono preamp. After you have plugged the RCA type audio-signal cable into the turntable’s output, you have to connect it to the phono input of the receiver’s preamp.
If the phono preamp is built within the receiver, it will have a section marked “PHONO” for the input. If the preamp is built within the turntable instead of the receiver, then you simply have to connect the audio signal cable to the Analog or Aux input jack of the receiver.
For that equipment where the phono preamp is sent separately, you can plug in the audio signal cable of the turntable into the input connector of the preamp component. Then you have to connect the preamp’s audio output cable to the analog audio input jack of the receiver and it will be fine.
3. What is the coefficient of the static friction between the coin and the turntable?
The coefficient of the static friction between the coin and the turntable is said to be 0.30. This is because the turntable is assumed to make 33.3 revolutions in a minute.
4. How to ground a turntable without a ground wire?
If your turntable does not come with a grounding wire, then you have to prepare and attach one to avoid a grounding loop that causes a humming sound. You will need an insulated stranded wire of 20 gauge. Before you set on the task of grounding, make sure the power supply to the turntable and the amplifier is switched off.
Now take a pair of pinch-nose pliers and strip the insulating plastic at the end of the wire to 6 mm. Now find out the “GROUND” label on the back of the amplifier. It is the grounding terminal and has to be unscrewed a little to connect the wire. Now take the two stripped wire ends and connect one to the chassis screw of the amplifier and the other to the screw of the turntable.
5. How to clean turntable stylus?
To keep the stylus in a good condition for a long time, it is imperative that you clean it regularly. A turntable stylus can be cleaned with a stylus brush, a melamine eraser, or a stylus cleaning gel. If you are using the brush, you just have to gently wipe the brush 2-3 times across the needle while holding the tonearm steadily.
For users preferring the erasers, we suggest that you slice off a tiny portion and gently push the eraser piece into the stylus 2-3 times until the dust is cleared. For the gel, the process is the same, except that you have to dip the stylus into the gel holder for cleaning and not the other way round.
6. How to replace turntable belt?
Before you replace the turntable belt, make sure you have the right size of the new belt for the record player. Once you have got the correct belt for the turntable, first switch off the power source so that you don’t get electrocuted.
Now, gently detach the plastic surface on which the record is placed from the shaft in the middle. Once removed, it will reveal a metallic or plastic disc called the platter. Unfasten it from the shaft according to the guidelines provided in the manual. Flip the platter on its backside and gently clean it. The next step is to stretch and spiral the belt along the circumference of the central hub. Line the belt’s ribbon with an access hole in the platter and put the platter back on the turntable. Through the hole for accessing, stretch the belt, and attach it around the spindle of the motor.
