ESI DuaFire Mobile Recording Interface [Winter NAMM 2008]

ESI will introduce several new products on the Winter NAMM show one of them has already been unveiled, a compact and portable recording interface specially designed for home or laptop-based studios. The ESI DuaFire Mobile Recording Interface is a upgraded version with a new design and some improvements from the device released 2 years ago.

The ESI DuaFire Mobile Recording Interface features 24-bit and 96kHz A/D and D/A converters, 2 channels, 1 XLR, 1 line, 2 RCA and 1 instrument inputs, 1 headphones, 2 1/4″ and 2 RCA outputs, FireWire connection, gain level controls per channel, headphones output level control and amp, support for DirectWIRE 3.0, EWDM, MME, ASIO 2.0, GSIF 2.0, CoreAudio and DirectSound formats.

As almost all ESI products this interface comes with Cubase LE 4.0 and works in Windows and Mac OS X. The ESI DuaFire Mobile Recording Interface is now available and its approximate price is $250.

Belkin iPod Podcast Studio

Belkin iPod Podcast StudioIt looks like the relationship between Belkin and the iPod is not over and will not be at the moment, their new product, that has been released at CES 2008, is a recording interface for iPod specially designed for podcasts. The Belkin iPod Podcast Studio will allow you to record you podcast anywhere you are without the need of a computer and then upload to your site.

The Belkin iPod Podcast Studio features have not been unveiled yet, there are only a few details like the compact size and portability, the dual XLR and 1/4″ inputs, built-in microphone, embedded speaker, mic volume control and, obviously, an iPod slot.

This will probably be a very interesting tool for collaborative podcast that can meet, for example, once a week to record the podcasts outside their houses. The Belkin iPod Podcast Studio will be available during the spring and its approximate price will be $100.

Olympus LS-10 Portable Recorder

The Olympus LS-10 is a portable recorder with a very good internal memory expansion slot card that will be very useful for those who need to record on the spot with a great audio quality.

The Olympus LS-10 Portable Recorder features 24-bit audio resolution and 96 kHz sampling rate, WAV, WMA and MP3 support, up to 12 hours of recording, built-in 2 GB memory, SD/SDHC slot, 2 cardioid mics for stereo recording, high-quality built-in mic amplifier, built-in stereo speakers, line and mic inputs, headphones output and USB connection (to connect it to your PC or Mac).

This portable recorder is powered by 2 AA batteries and comes bundled with Cubase LE 4. The Olympus LS-10 Portable Recorder will be available this month and its approximate price will be $400.

EKS XP5 Controller

EKS XP5 ControllerThis new product released by Finland company EKS can be a great addition for computer or laptop based DJs for its easy-to-use, the EKS XP5 Controller is a plug-and-play USB controller that has a very simple and clean design and a small size. A very interesting tool for DJs that don’t want to carry big devices for their shows.

The EKS XP5 Controller features 22 assignable buttons, 4.5″ high precision touch-sensitive jog wheel (that can scratch or cue the track and stop the playing), 100mm pitch slider, 4 Hz to 24 kHz frequency response, 106 dB SNR, ASIO and Bison driver support, stereo RCA output and USB 2.0 connector.

This controller is USB powered and comes with the Bison DJ software and USB and RCA cables and works with Windows (2000 or higher) and Mac OS (10.4 or higher). The EKS XP5 Controller is now available and its price is $179.

Sonic Impact Class T Digital Amplifier Gen 2

Sonic Impact Class T Digital Amplifier Gen 2This is one of the amps’ coolest releases lately and it can be added to a portable amp list. The Sonic Impact Class T Digital Amplifier Gen 2 is a very small and portable amp that includes the Class T amp architecture that allows you to have in a small box a high quality tone with a high power output.

The Sonic Impact Class T Digital Amplifier Gen 2 features 2 channels, 15W power output per channel, 102 dB dynamic range, 4 and 8 ohm passive support output, 3 amp outputs, stereo 1/8″ auxiliary input (for iPod or MP3 players), a stereo 1/8″ to RCA adapter, a 6 foot stereo 1/8″ RCA cable and its size is 1.18″ height x 6″ width x 5.5″ depth.

This amp can be powered by 8 AA batteries or with the AC power adapter. The Sonic Impact Class T Digital Amplifier Gen 2 is now available and its recommended price is $51. By the way, it reminds me a lot of a hip flask.

Although there is not any information yet on the Tascam website, they will release a new model on the Recording product line. This new model is an update of 2 of the DP-01 product series, The Tascam DP-02 and DP-02CF Digital Portastudios

The Tascam DP-02 Digital Portastudio features 8-channel recording, 40GB internal hard drive, 16-bit resolution and 44.1 kHz sampling rate, volume fader, pan and effect send controls and 2-band EQ per channel, transport controls, backlit LCD display, built-in metronome and chromatic tuner, guitar, bass, drum and vocal multi-effects (including a stereo reverb processor), 2 XLR mic/line inputs, headphones, stereo RCA line and S/PDIF digital outputs, +48V phantom power, built-in CD-RW recorder and USB 2.0 port.

The Tascam DP-02CF Digital Portastudio features 8-channel recording, 16-bit resolution and 44.1 kHz sampling rate, volume fader, pan and effect send controls and 2-band EQ per channel, transport controls, backlit LCD display, built-in metronome, 2 XLR mic/line inputs, headphones, stereo RCA line and S/PDIF digital outputs, +48V phantom power, compact flash card slot, 1GB included compact flash card and USB 2.0 port.

Both models are now available and their prices are $299.95 for the Tascam DP-02CF model and $499.95 for the Tascam DP-02 model.

M-Audio has introduced a new product from its mobile recording product line that belongs to the Fast Track series, a portable audio & MIDI interface that will allow you to record everywhere you go, of course you will need a computer. The M-Audio Fast Track Ultra Interface includes analog and digital inputs and outputs and its recording quality is 24-bit & 96 kHz.

The M-Audio Fast Track Ultra Interface features 8 x 8 channels (that can be used simultaneously), MX Core DSP mixer with built-in effects, flexible channel routing options and larger channel interface (16 x 8), 4 M-Audio Octane preamps with phantom power, 2 XLR and 2 XLR/TRS inputs and 20 dB pad, 6 balanced line, S/PDIF and MIDI inputs, 6 balanced analog, 2 headphones (with level knob), S/PDIF and MIDI outputs and USB 2.0 port.

This device works in PC and Mac (universal) computers with low-latency drivers (WDM, MME, Asio 2.0 or Core Audio) and is powered by the USB port. The M-Audio Fast Track Ultra Interface is available for preorder and its price is $349.

CME has released a new product on its MIDI keyboard product line, a portable MIDI controller that has been called CME M-Key Portable MIDI Controller. This controller is a ultra-thin MIDI keyboard has been based on the U-Key Mobiltone model but simplifying its interface and its controls for those who don’t need a huge number of controls

The CME M-Key Portable MIDI Controller features 49 keys, ultra-thin, semi-weighted and velocity sensitive keys, assignable joystick and slider controls, function and 2 data entry buttons, on/off LED, USB and MIDI output and (switch or expression) pedal input connections and note-key shortcut function.

This controller works with Windows XP and Mac OS X through the MIDI USB interface and comes with the CME MusicPack software bundle that includes Samplitude SE or Analog Factory SE among others. The CME M-Key Portable MIDI Controller is now available and its price is $100.
