    I NEED A DECENT DIGITALL RECORDER. I NEED 2-3 CHANNELS FOR SYNTHS [LEAD, PADS & BEAT] AND 1-2 CHANNELS FOR VOICE & CLASSICAL PIANO. I WILL RECORD DIRECTLY FROM MY KORG TRITON LE AND 2 M-AUDIO LUNA CONDENSER MICS. I DON’T WANT TO USE PC, SOFT SYNTHS, OR DAW. I JUST WANT TO REHEARSE, REC AND PLAY. THE ONLY THING I WILL DO WITH MY LAPTOP IS TO INSERT THE FLASH CARD AND BACKUP THE .WAV FILES OR CONVERT THEM TO .MP3. THAT’S ALL. WHICH ONE OF THE FOLLOWING DO YOU RECOMMEND?

    FLASH CARD-BASED

    FOSTEX MR-8 MKII
    TASCAM DP-02 CF
    ZOOM MRS 8SD
    BOSS BR-600

    HD/CDRW-BASED
    FOSTEX MR-8 HD/CD
    TASCAM DP-02
    BOSS BR-900CD V2

    Well,

    I’m making my choice between Tascam DP-02CF and Fostex MR-8 mkII.

    Reasons:
    * HD versions are way more expensive (Flash versions are generally 2/3 or 1/2 of the price)
    * HDs break more easily than Flash card readers/writers
    * I’m not interested on Zoom and Boss products (personal distaste)

    Here is my Google-research results on these two machines with nearly same price tag….

    Tascam DP-02CF

    * 8/10 points in zzsound.com reviews (43 rated)

    seems to have a durable metal casing (atleast DP02 has)
    mixer section really good for the price (hi-EQ lo-EQ EQ-freq pan FX-send)
    easy to operate, all useful controls on top
    operates on 12V (is probably usable outdoors/in-summer-cottage on your car’s accu-battery/similar)
    - will not burn master CDs, needs a computer…

    Fostex MR-8 mkII

    * 6/10 points in zzsound.com reviews (48 people rated)

    internal mic for quick idea-captures
    apparenly burns CDs with “off the shelf USB CD-recorder”
    battery operable
    - headphone-output is said to be noisy
    - toy-like plastic casing
    - mixer section quite limited
    - uses some frustrating menu navigation and uses some useless buttons on top (mastering fx for example)
    - because of FAT16 filesystem, cannot really use CF-cards larger than 2GB

    This much I’ve gathered after surfing the net for 2 hours… None of these is my own experiences, since I don’t own neither device yet. I just wrote this to make my decision on which one to buy. Seems like I’m gonna get Tascam tomorrow.

    Hope this research helps anybody…

    Further to Arttu’s recapitulation: BOSS 600 in the similar price bracket does not have Phantom power, so some microphones won’t work, its 128MB memory is not enough and suppliers are not certain, which flash card is actualy compatible, it has on the other hand good range of effects (BOSS is good at that)manufacture does not includes power supply and batteries last about 2 hrs!!!!
    I agree with Arttu, Fostex appears to be somehow toylike plastic, also it does not have TONE CONTROL!!
