Akai MPC500, real product?

Mpc500

It looks like the rumour of a portable Akai MPC series device, the long-awaited MPC500, may come true before the end of the year. The rumour started last year before Musikmesse but then there was no MPC500.

There are some news that could mean that the release is near. At Music thing and Gearjunkies explain the reasons for that.

The Akai MPC serie products are professional music production centers with 64-Track MIDI Sequencer and a 32-voice Stereo Digital Sampler, programmable pad buttons, Q-Link sliders, …

It would be a great thing if Akai made this product portable, but the photo released as MPC500 (the image of the post) is too similar to a Sony PSP. We’ll wait for more news, the final release or the confirmation of the story as a hoax.

UPDATE (09/17/2006): From Music Thing we receive some news about the MPC500: it will be able to run with batteries, it will have 12 pads and its price will be $749. This news came from MPC’s forums so we’ll wait for confirmation.

UPDATE (09/19/2006): Music Thing has some images that seem to be real images of MPC500, you can take a look. The device looks small but, in my opinion, not small enough to be portable.
