There are many ways to create music. The traditional ones were by playing an instrument but nowadays almost everything can be used to compose and record a song. For example, a Gameboy with Nanoloop.
This is a cartridge for Game Boy and Gameboy Advance (and all their respective models) with a simple sequencer which controls the sound generators included in the consoles.
There are four different generators (two rectangular, one custom wave and one noise) which can be controlled independently. The patterns can be saved in an internal flash memory and the cartdrige costs 58 euros.
